The plague doctor robe that reads from the sidewalk
A floor-length black hooded robe with a button front, a beaked leather-look mask, a flat-brim hat, and gloves. The apothecary props come with it: a lantern, a skull-top cane, an oversized syringe, a braided garlic bulb, and a cross on a cord. It is cut for a grown-up frame, not a kid's.

Why it holds up
The beak is the outline
From the curb all anyone gets is the shape: the beak, the hat brim, the hem dragging the porch. The buttons, the cross, and the stitching on the mask only land once they are up on the steps.
Props to hold at the door
The lantern, the skull-top cane, the garlic braid and the oversized syringe give your hands something to do between doorbells. None of it moves or lights on its own, so the whole act is worked by you.
Slightly scary, not graphic
Slightly scary is the setting. The beak and the hood carry the menace, and there is nothing graphic on the robe, so the small ones still walk up for candy instead of stalling at the curb.

Wear it at the door, then fold it away
On the night you are the one on the steps with the bowl, in costume the whole time instead of a hoodie and a bedsheet. Come November the robe folds flat and the mask, hat, and props drop into the same bin as the rest of the yard. Standard shipping runs 5 to 7 days, express 3 to 4.
